This is Steven Pressfield.

He’s not only an author, but a wealth of wisdom when it comes to writing and the creative process.

Here are 5 life changing lessons from him.

1) Overcome Resistance

Resistance is the force that’s equal and opposite to your potential.

It’s the part of your ego that sabotages your best work.

Self-doubt, fear, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, etc. These are all manifestations of resistance.

You overcome resistance by:
– Being aware of it
– Doing the work anyway (consistently)

2) Turn Pro

Approach your creative work like a professional, not an amateur.

Show up daily, prioritize it, and give it your best.

Make a firm decision to turn pro — even if you’re still a beginner — and your progress will accelerate.

3) The Power of Consistency

Daily practice is essential for all creative work.

When you focus on consistency, instead of waiting/hoping for inspiration to strike, you’ll find yourself getting A LOT done over time.

This is why I always recommend writing every day, even for just 30 minutes.

4) Discipline & Playfulness

Discipline is important, but so is playfulness.

Don’t forget to add some fun and play to fuel your creative spirit.

The best creative work is found when you balance discipline and playfulness.

5) The Importance of Finishing

Follow through with your consistent practices and see your projects to completion.

Once you finish something — even something small or imperfect — it changes you. You know it’s possible now.

The journey isn’t easy, and it can get messy, but the satisfaction of finishing a creative project is unmatched.
